Uncover Ocean with IO PAN

Embark on a journey with Insitute of Oceanology PAN as they unravel the mysteries of the marine world.

Our mission? To explore, understand, and share the scientific understanding of our oceans, all while ensuring their protection and sustainable use.

Our research sails us into the Baltic Sea and the European Arctic Seas. Here, we concentrate on four key strategic areas:

  1. The Ocean’s Role in Climate Change: We’re probing the role of the oceans in climate change and its repercussions on European seas.
  2. The Changing Baltic Sea: We’re examining the natural and human-induced fluctuations in the Baltic Sea environment.
  3. Shifting Coastal Ecosystems: We’re observing the ongoing alterations in the coastal ecosystems of shelf seas.
  4. Marine Life Mechanisms: We’re delving into the genetic and physiological mechanisms of marine organisms and laying the groundwork for marine biotechnology.

Since our establishment in 1953, we’ve been at the forefront of oceanic research. We also place a strong emphasis on education, offering a Ph.D. program and a host of activities for the wider public, with a special emphasis on the younger generation. Our Ph.D. program is designed to nurture a highly competent young scientific team capable of tackling research problems independently.

We have the privilege to award scientific doctoral degrees (since 1993) and associate professor degrees (since 2000) in the field of natural sciences, in the discipline of Earth and related environmental sciences.

Our database is a rich repository of information, featuring results of numerical modeling, physical oceanographic data, and marine ecology parameters, all amassed over years of scientific expeditions and research programs.

We are part of various scientific consortia, all with the goal of enhancing marine-oriented research capabilities.

And the jewel in our crown? The research sailing vessel Oceania. This Polish research vessel is equipped to conduct interdisciplinary oceanographic research in waters around the world (except the polar zone in winter). Each year, r/v Oceania spends 230-270 days at sea, embarking on numerous cruises on the Baltic Sea and an 80-day expedition to the European Arctic areas (AREX) from June to August.

Come aboard as we continue to navigate the uncharted waters of our oceans!
